Born and educated in South Africa, Sandra Chait cut her writing teeth in London, England, before settling in Seattle, Washington with her husband, Alan.

She has a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Washington and for several years, taught Modernist and Post-Modernist English and African Literature there. As Associate Director of the Program on Africa, she also established an African Studies Literary Series.
